We are not senators, but we are human beings

Do your job. Help the people closest to you. Meet unkindness with kindness.

We are not senators. But we are human beings, connected to all other human beings. Our job is to do our job, and to do it virtuously and honestly.

Our job as citizens is to take part in politics, not to give up on it simply because it disappoints and disgusts us. Our job is to help the people we can help who are closest to us: those who have lost their jobs, those who have been targeted, those who don't have the advantages we have.

It's easy to have a comeback. It's easy to dunk on the idiot who's attacking you. It's therapeutic and cathartic even. But it doesn't help us move forward.

It's not a great look, and it certainly doesn't change their mind.

So let's focus today on meeting everyone and everything with kindness, especially unkindness.

TRY THIS TODAY

Next time someone says something designed to provoke you, online or in person, don't fire back. Reply with kindness, or not at all.

A note on sources

Much of what I've learned about Stoicism comes from Ryan Holiday. Find more of his writing at dailystoic.com and ryanholiday.net.

While I have edited much of this content, there are some cases where I have taken Ryan Holiday's words directly. I've included them because I think they are powerful and will be helpful for you. They are also helpful for me, and I've put them here so I can learn and understand more myself.
