All you control is how you play

Tune out the noise. Focus on your own effort.

Ryan Holiday tells the sports teams he talks to that all they control is how they play. They don't control what the fans say, what the other players say or what the coach says. They only control what they think of themselves and what they do. They've got to tune out the rest.

“

All you control is how you play. Tune out the rest.

The same is true for the rest of us. Focus not on whether other people like you, but on your effort, your drive and your focus. Not on whether other people appreciate it.

Do your job. Play your game. Let the rest go.

TRY THIS TODAY

Before your next big moment, write down three things about your own effort you'll focus on. Ignore everything else.

A note on sources

Much of what I've learned about Stoicism comes from Ryan Holiday. Find more of his writing at dailystoic.com and ryanholiday.net.

While I have edited much of this content, there are some cases where I have taken Ryan Holiday's words directly. I've included them because I think they are powerful and will be helpful for you. They are also helpful for me, and I've put them here so I can learn and understand more myself.
